Our activities

Adventure or relaxation – explore the best of beach and bush at GweGwe Beach Lodge. All activities can be guided or self-guided once you know your way around the reserve. The choice is yours. 

Single track and “jeep” track cycling

What better way to explore this gorgeous reserve and get those endorphins flowing. Mountain bikes are available at the lodge and both jeep track and single-track cycle routes are available.

Hiking Adventures

The reserve offers numerous hiking adventures and what a great way to discover Mkambati on foot. 

Waterfall and Rock Pool Exploration

There are a multitude of waterfalls and rock pools to discover. Take a cooler box and set off exploring.

Wonderful Secluded Beaches

Where soft sand meets gentle waves, far from the crowds and hidden in nature’s embrace. These pristine escapes offer tranquility, with nothing but the beauty of the natural landscape around you. Whether you are looking to relax, snorkel, or explore, these secluded beaches are a true escape.

Birdwatching

With abundant birdlife, our reserve is a must for bird enthusiasts. You can also visit one of the largest remaining breeding colonies of Cape Vultures in the Eastern Cape, which is a truly special sight. 

Water sports

Mkambati is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and water adventure lovers! Kayak, canoe, stand up paddle (SUP) boarding can be enjoyed on the lagoon or river. Venture out to sea on calmer days to enjoy either bodyboarding or surfing.

Guided Marine, Nature Walks and Drives

Enjoy a guided walk or drive to explore the marine, botanical and natural wonders of this remarkable reserve, both on land and in the intertidal zone.

Whale Watching

Experience the awe-inspiring sight of humpback whales from the coastline as they migrate along our shores. The best viewing months are June to August and October to November.

Snorkelling

Explore the lagoon and the reef at low tide to marvel at the vibrant marine life.

Sardine Run

Experience the spectacular sardine run – We will have off-shore boats available for an unforgettable ocean adventure during the height of the sardine run season, which is from June to the end of July. Off-shore boats are available for this experience. (An additional cost applies)

Fishing

Available for catch-and-release or for the pot. Fishing permits must be bought in advance, through the online Department of Environment’s website (www.dffe.gov.za) and the permits must be carried with you whilst fishing. We have a small supply of fishing equipment available, keen fisherman are welcome to bring their own equipment.

Sightseeing Voyages

Embark on an exhilarating sea adventures or explore the coastline with the opportunity of visiting iconic landmarks, such as Waterfall Bluff. This trip requires advance booking and an additional cost applies. 

Cave Exploration

Discover ancient Bushman/San paintings, historical shell food middens and other signs of early man who inhabited this coastline – and some of the high adrenalin activities (strictly at your own risk!).

Picnic and Dining

Pack a picnic basket and enjoy meals in the sunshine or at sunset, on the beach or next to a waterfall. A feast for the eyes, the soul and the stomach!

Body and Soul

Enjoy your daily workout at the gym, or indulge in a soothing body massage or facial in the forest spa.  (Additional costs apply for all spa treatments)

Kids can have tons of fun at our Kiddies Corner, enjoying a range of activities that will keep them engaged amidst beautiful, natural surroundings.
